turned an amused gaze up to Chris before he straightened away from D.J. "Don't get excited." Kirk smiledthe same oily, knowing smile that had made Chris want to bust Kirk's nose in the pastthe same smile he'd used when Chris had found his foster brother in bed with the one girl Chris had dated since college. Chris hadn't loved her, but then, neither had Kirk. Still, Chris had cared for the girl and had enjoyed the feeling of being a couple, of fitting in with the rest of the world, if only on the surface. Kirk hadn't known Chris's feelings. He'd seduced the girl just to prove to Chris that he could. Kirk had always seen a competition between them where none existed. Chris had most often ignored any challenge. That day, over five years in the past, Chris had lost his temper and made use of his training to harm someone, instead of for defense, as he'd been taught. Funny, but he'd never felt guilty for bending his principles when it came to Kirk. He'd broken his foster brother's nose before Kirk even got out of bed. Then, while Chris's ex-girlfriend screamed and Kirk shouted obscenities as blood flowed down his chin, Chris had walked out of the man's apartment. He hadn't seen Kirk Rousseau since. |

Kirk squeezed D.J.'s shoulders one final time. Chris's lips tightened. Kirk saw the movement and laughed out loud. "I'm going, brother mine. I'm going." Then he turned and walked away, laughing as he went. |
